Finished And Unfinished Hardwood Flooring

Unfinished Hardwood Flooring encompasses the type of flooring that one will need to sand and finish after it is installed. It comes in 3 grades: Clear 1st grade, Select and Better 2nd grade, and Natural 3rd grade. The Clear is the cleanest grade. It has the least amount of color and there are no knots in the wood. The Select and Better includes more color variation and a few small knots in the wood. The Natural is also referred to as #1 and #2 Common. The Natural will have a lot of color including mineral streaks, sticker stains, and knots. Sticker stains refer to what happens to the wood when they are stacked while drying. The size of each type of board varies slightly.

If you are a little worried about the installation but still want real hardwood floors, you might want to consider engineered oak flooring. It will still be real oak, but it will already be finished for you and all you have to do is install it. That is even easier as the thicker boards can simply be glued down instead of nailed down. This kind of flooring is also more resistant to moisture so that may be a consideration as well as to what you are going to use.
